Profile

The Chair of Economics and Information Systems focuses its course offering and research activity on the role of information and decision-making in economics and business life. The research interests at the Chair span the business impact of the information economy, and of electronic platforms; the design and optimal regulation of market and non-market processes; the study of decision-making and strategic interactions.

Besides teaching and research the Chair is also actively engaged on industry projects, which typically focus on innovation at the interface of business and technology. In recent years, the Chair has supported national and international industry partners ranging from technology startups to large corporations and industry associations.

Courses

The Chair of Economics and Information Systems offers courses in all main HHL study programs, including full- and part-time M.Sc. and MBA, doctoral and Executive programs (GEMBA, Euro*MBA). Our course offering aims to provide cross-disciplinary knowledge relevant to the complex challenges of tomorrow's managers and entrepreneurs.

Some of our courses include elements of blended learning (webinars, online forums); all of our courses offer opportunities for teamwork and case-based discussions.

Research

Economic theory deals with rational decisions within and outside of markets and therefore provides a uniform language and methodology in many fields of business economics, from finance to strategic organizations. The recent emergence of computerized networks created exciting new opportunities for the design and commercial exploitation of novel digital technologies and business processes.

Reflecting this new reality, research focus at the department lies at the interface of economics and information sciences, and in particular on the foundations of decision theory and game theory, information theory, and agent-based artificial intelligence, the design of electronic markets, the estimation of consumer preferences, quantum information, social choice, and mathematical finance.

While the research focus of the Chair is theoretical, many of the results carry implications for various business fields, including market design, strategy, business intelligence, negotiation, finance, economic networks, regulation, and corporate governance.

Knowledge Transfer

Intelligent Energy Europe – A project by the European Commission

The aim of the EU-funded EmPower project is to support the dissemination of intelligent energy technologies which are already available, but whose potential remains largely unexploited due to a lack of experience or technical knowledge by secondary users (installation companies, planners, etc.), thus limiting demand.

Such knowledge gaps are significant in regions which enjoy both a lively local supply and strong potential demand of intelligent energy solutions, but also widely across EU regions, whereby some are particularly suited to deploy specific solutions, which originate from the experience of other regions. Engineering companies, architects, installers, and local institutional actors should be empowered to take full advantage of novel intelligent energy solutions, and transmit those advantages to their clientele.

The prompt adoption of those solutions stimulates the market and generates more investment in innovation, activating a virtuous circle of economic and technological progress, which some EU regions have already witnessed. Some of the partner regions in the EmPower project are technology leaders in intelligent energy solutions, while others – due to geographical location, natural resources or local regulations – are, or are poised to become, very significant markets for those innovative solutions.

EmPower activities therefore focus on the training of technicians, who are responsible for installation and/ or maintenance of  energy-related products, and other key service providers, e.g. architects, who contribute to plan and advise end users on the choice of equipment.

A further aim of the project is to increase the dissemination of intelligent energy solutions which have been developed or which are distributed by SME in participating regions, to promote vertical and horizontal networking in order to further their implementation, and to stimulate customer demand.

Finally, the initiative aims to stimulate the transfer of technologies between partner regions, and to promote sustainable innovations by local businesses e.g. architects, who contribute to plan and advise end users on the choice of equipment.

As part of their studies at HHL, many students participate in a field project. In general, all projects are conducted together with a corporate partner. The projects are real-life consulting cases provided by corporate partners. Groups of 4 to 5 students act as a consulting team for a corporate client. Below you will find a selection of projects supervised by the chair of Economics and Information Systems.
